Among those who speak very highly about filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. are Paul Thomas Anderson and Louis C.K. and no wonder, as this cult counterculture figure himself says that “There are no rules at all.” Greaser’s Palace, a Jesus-gone-Wild-West freakout caused a pretty huge stir and Downey was accused of blasphemy, however time has smoothed the roughest edges off the outrage and this film still tests our funny bones. Let us take you into the shabby dusty world filled with bizarre characters with bizarre names who sing, dance, heal, die, come to life again, take a crap, or not, or simply exist next to each other in a fishy unity. Downey Sr. shares his recollection of one of the Greaser’s Palace screenings: “Some guy ran out of the theatre and got hit by a cab when he saw that movie. That’s all I know.” Please, get home safe and sound.
